Stephen Hughes Photographs book research

Analysis of the book ‘Stephen Hughes Photographs’ by Stephen Hughes.

  • The first thing I noticed after looking at the first couple of pages was that there was a blank page, then a photo, then the publisher and associations page. After that it resumed to normal with a foreword combined with a couple of image followed by the main body of images. This is the first time I’ve seen this done and I think it adds to refreshing nature of the book which is provided by the colour scheme and airy, light tones of the photos.
  •   This book follows the standard one image per page. The images almost completely cover the page and it isn’t accompanied by a location or date caption. I think the fact that it’s on its own adds to the minimalist look of the photos and keeps you focused on the image.
  •   Like I said earlier I like the light colours of the image. They are also complimented by the colours of the text backgrounds which gives a natural flow and professional look.
  •  The front cover is very simple. One big photo covering the page leaving a small gap for a white border. The text isn’t something I have seen in photobooks before. It’s subtracted from the picture which is a theme that’s continued throughout the book when it displays its headings. However I don’t think this sort of technique would work on the style of images that I will be producing because they will be much darker in terms of their tones and feel, so a simpler technique will have to be thought out.
  • Like a hard back this book has cover flaps which seems strange because they don’t seem to serve a purpose. The book only has 50 pages and it’s a picture book so losing your page isn’t a big deal; the only reason I think they are there for is aesthetic reasons.
