In this section of work I propose to produce a book on
landscape photography. I will shoot on locations of my choice as I take the
journey named ‘Coast to Coast’. I’ve decided on this because it would be
prefect of me to get back into the landscape where I spent a lot of my
childhood, but also to get back into photography which I haven’t done properly since the
landscape module in level 4. To achieve this I will loosely follow the book ‘A
COAST TO COAST WALK’ which was devised by Alfred Wainwright. It’s a fairly
straight route that stretches from St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay which will
provide me with a range of subjects to record. While the main theme is
documenting the land, I also want to portray the fluctuating weather conditions
that I will no doubt encounter because they are very much part of the character
of locations across the route, especially across the lake district. To record
the landscape I will use a 6D alongside a tripod so the picture quality is up
to standard. I’ve chosen to go digital for my journey because there are a lot
of photos to be taken in very short space of time so speed is priority over the
potential character of film. Because of the time constraints I think that I
will produce around 20 final images. I believe this to be a good compromise of
speed, quality and quantity
Because producing a book is completely new to me, my research
will have to be primarily on creating it. To be successful I will have to
research the best places to create them, or if it’s possible to create my own.
I need to take a look into how other photographers have done their photobooks, paying particular attention to how they’ve
laid out their images on the page or how many per page and how the type of photos
effect these decisions. To start this research I will look at the books and
work of the following photographers: ‘The
Great Wide Open: Panoramic Photographs of the American West’. By Jennifer
A. Watts and Claudia Bohn-Spector, ‘LANDMARKS’
By Fay Godwin. ‘STEPHEN HUGHES
PHOTOGRAPHS’ By Stephen Hughes, and lastly ‘INDUSTRIAL LANDSCPAPE’ By Bernd & Hilla Becher. One thing I
didn’t consider before talking to tutors was the name of the book which turns
out to be a very important factor in photobooks which I will have to research
accordingly and base it around Wainwrights book.
