‘LANDMARKS’ by Fay Godwin
- Out of all the books I’ve looked at this contains my favourite images because there is some irony and humour in the way that they have been constructed. The book contains all aspects of landscape so it gives a truly accurate representation in my opinion.
- This is the first photobook that successfully combined black and white with colour. It’s done by creating a black and white section in the beginning and then the colour to end which works nicely. It helps create progression in the book, the book starts with portraits and wide open landscapes, then as it turns to colour; the images take a close up/ personal turn.
- Every page in the book contains a pair, whether that be two images or an image with a piece of writing. There’s always a link between the objects. The two image per page idea has really grown on me because I think pairing images strengthens them visually and allows the narrative to flow from image to image
- The cover of the book is simple. A small image in the centre, book name and photographer name in large text above the image, writers at the bottom in smaller text. It’s a clean look that I like. The most dominant aspect of the cover is the book name because of its size which is something that I will consider when it comes to designing my own cover.
- Space is one of the things that makes this book successful in my opinion. White space around the images without the clutter of text is what makes the photos standout in both sections of the book. Because the images are smaller it makes viewing them easier which also help the narrative flow.
